Comprehensive Neurology Fellowship

Birgham and Women's Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, Failkner Hospital and Harvard Medical School

Program Directors:
Drs. Kevin Kyle and Mary O'Neal

The Mass General Brigham Combined Comprehensive Neurology fellowship at HMS is a new fellowship, accredited in 2024, that is uniquely designed to train academic clinical neurologists. This fellowship includes rotations at Brigham and Women’s Neuroscience Center at the main campus, the Faulkner Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospitals in Boston, MA.

The overarching goal of the fellowship is to instill the pivotal skills necessary to be an expert academic general neurologist in the ambulatory arena and to develop the skills to be a leader in this field.

This one-year fellowship is focused on training excellent clinical general neurologists with the integration of formal and informal didactics, fellows as teachers and research activities. Fellows will care for patients with general neurologic disorders and will rotate within many of our subspecialty divisions.

Training

The majority of the fellowship is focused on clinical care. The fellowship follows a graduated independence model: at the beginning of the fellowship every visit is discussed and staffed, while by the end of the year fellows will be able to largely manage patients independently and discuss cases with preceptors as needed. x

The fellowship will encompass advanced training specific to ambulatory general neurology in the academic setting. The overarching goal is to train master academic clinical neurologists. This will be accomplished by core longitudinal ambulatory clinics in general neurology predominantly, but with dedicated time in key subspecialities pertinent to general neurology including epilepsy, functional neurologic disorders, headache, movement disorders, cognitive behavioral and neuromuscular medicine. Other subspecialty electives will also be offered, such as autoimmune neurology, autonomic, multiple sclerosis, otoneurology and obstetrical neurology.

Another integral component of the fellowship will be positioning our fellows as teachers. This will include dedicated time precepting our MGB neurology residents in outpatient clinic.

Fellows are expected to complete a scholarly project during the year; which could include publication of quality improvement projects, literature reviews, case reports/series, amongst many other academic projects based on fellow interest. Extensive mentorship in research design, conduct, and writing is provided. Many opportunities for formal and informal teaching are provided throughout the year, ranging from formal presentations at conferences to having residents and other rotators shadow in a clinic.

Didactics are woven throughout the fellowship and include formal teaching conferences. Fellows are also strongly encouraged to attend local and national educational conferences.

Our fellowship adheres to Mass General Brigham GME policies.
